Creativity Rocks! Drawings, Poems, Stories & Dance by Elementary Students from Etobicoke
Presented by the Milkweed Collective: April 15 – 21, 2013 at Neilson Park Creative Centre
Reception: April 17, 2013,
On April 17, close to 70 Grade 7-8 students from North Kipling Junior Middle School performed original poetry and interpretive dance on the theme of human rights as part of the reception for the Creativity Rocks! exhibition and in celebration of National Poetry Month.
At the event, the youth had the opportunity to work closely with spoken word artist Andrea Thompson, who coached their performances and honoured the youth with a performance of one of her own pieces.
Creativity Rocks! featured vibrant drawings, poems and stories by 35 students in Grades 2 to 8 from 7 Etobicoke schools. These aspiring artists created their artwork during the Exploring Creativity in Depth (ECiD) program.
Reflective viewing of artwork in a gallery, making original drawings with oil pastels, writing poems and stories about the drawings and sharing in small groups stimulates the creative imagination.
As part of the process, students create two drawings – one at the start of the workshop, and one nearer the end - to show the transformations that take place when creativity is experienced in depth.
The sole recipient of funding in Ontario, North Kipling JMS is one of twelve schools in Canada, coast to coast, awarded the ArtsSmarts 21st Century Youth Creativity Challenge, Round 2.
