Your Life, OUR LIFE: A Day in the Life of a Sheltered Youth
A selection of photographic works by the youth of Touchstone Youth Shelter
Led by HEYY Summer Outreach workers
Sep 14 to Oct 7 at Beit Zatoun
Earlier this fall, we were pleased to support the exhibition Your Life, OUR LIFE: A Day in the Life of a Sheltered Youth.
For this inspiring exhibition, Hearing Every Youth Through Youth (HEYY) worked with youth at Touchstone Youth Center, who used disposable cameras to document moments from their everyday life. Their photographs explored what it means to be homeless and sought to abolish the many stereotypes that come with being a homeless youth.
A selection of the photographs were then displayed at Beit Zatoun in a public exhibition. Special thanks to Hala Sayed, a youth outreach worker for HEYY and frequent Arts Etobicoke volunteer, who brought this exhibition to our attention.
HEYY is a peer-to-peer support helpline in the GTA operated by Neighbourhood Centre through the generous support of the United Way, City of Toronto and others. www.neighbourhoodcentre.org
Opened in 1991, Touchstone Youth Center is a 32-bed emergency shelter for 16 to 24-year-old homeless and at-risk youth. In addition to providing safe shelter, Touchstone addresses the many issues facing homeless youth by offering an employment program, housing help, a drop-in center and an outreach worker. Touchstone Youth Center is located at 1076 Pape. www.touchstoneyc.org
