Surprise Opera Performances / Over $7,000 Raised at Artful Palate Fundraiser
Wed, June 20, 2012 at Cirillo’s Culinary Academy
Beautiful singing and gourmet cooking were the perfect ingredients for another memorable fundraiser hosted by Cirillo’s Culinary Academy. In addition to food demonstration and tasting stations, Artful Palate guests were treated to surprise performances of operatic favourites.
During the event, professional opera singers burst into song, beginning with 'Libiamo ne' lieti calici' (Drinking Song) from Verdi’s La traviata. 'Largo al factotum' from Rossini’s The Barber of Seville followed, performed by baritone Douglas Tranquada (above photo) with the assistance of Co-Chair Karl Sprogis – who received a surprise shave!
More popular arias rounded out the evening: ‘Granada’ (Lara) sung by tenor Edward Morysiak; ‘Habanera’ from Carmen (Bizet) sung by mezzo-soprano Catharin Carew; Tesori's ‘Girl in 14G’ sung by soprano Charlene Santoni; and the finale, a quartet from La bohème.
We would like to thank these amazing artists, who contributed their time and talents to make our event so memorable. A special thank you goes to Douglas Tranquada for coordinating the performances.
The event raised over $7,000 which will support the unique arts education programming that we offer to our community.
We express our deep appreciation to John and Margit Cirillo of Cirillo's Culinary Academy for hosting and sponsoring this beautiful event. Now in its third year, The Artful Palate has raised over $15,000, helping us to provide safe and fun learning environments for local families, promote and nurture diverse artists, emerging and established, and reach out to children and youth in underserved communities.
Special thanks to our Ticket Sales Committee: Board members Ina Anthony, Nancy Newton, Lone Smith and Karl Sprogis.
